"What kinda switch were you thinking? Just one or--" wait a second. John's thoughts briefly lag in catching up with him, and in those stunted moments he can only blink over his befuddled surprise. The expression on his face says he absolutely did not think of that, but he's sometimes good at manipulating that, too.
"Oh, I dunno-- I mean, I didn't not think about it," a devilish smirk concealing what might be a secret lie. Of course he thought of that, totally, his moments of naivety are all created and used with intention and purpose. All of them.
