Canon Point: End of S03E05 "Anything For You"
Age: Mid twenties
Appearance:
The smug one in the middle.History: In the show, we learn very little of Ed's childhood except that it created a man with several severe, trauma related mental illnesses which were exacerbated by and exacerbated in return his schizophrenia and psychosis. It can be safely assumed that his childhood mirrored that of his comic counterpart, being raised by highly abusive parents who neglected his emotional and intellectual needs and physically and verbally abused their son. His mother left part way into his adolescence and the abuse from his father intensified until Edward got out under a full scholarship to university.
From there, the show fills his
history.
Personality: Above all, Edward is
obsessive. The obsessions might change from time to time (barring his fascination with word play, riddles and puzzles), but they are all consuming when he has them. Ed will obsessively try to get recognition for his intelligence and contributions if he feels he's under appreciated and once something is started, he can't help but try and finish it the way he planned. Overthinking things is another part of his obsessive behaviour, but his obsessive behaviour also leads to one of his strongest virtues, his
devotion. There is nothing Ed won't do for someone he has latched onto. He murders a man to protect his first obsession (Kristen Kringle) and the machiavellian lengths he goes to to uplift and protect Oswald Cobblepot include being willing to die to better Oswald's position.
Beyond his obsessive tendencies, Ed
seeks recognition of his intellect from any quarter. He can't help but show off his intelligence at any given chance and craves for others to acknowledge him, constantly seeking that reassurance and praise that he is far more intelligent than the general population. Unfortunately, combined with Ed's
amorality, it had led him to committing crimes as much for the thrill of proving he can and then get away with it, since he has a lot of sociopathic traits which has led him to lack real empathy with most people and his moral understandings are nearly entirely intellectual.
As a note, Edward suffers from several mental illnesses. He has bouts of mania, bouts of psychosis with hallucinations and violent outbursts but the worst is that he has a disassociated identity. His other half, the Riddler, is smooth, confident, manipulative and craves attention of any kind from anyone in any way. Ed often hears his other self whispering to him, or sees him in hallucinations. The more stressed and more uncertain Ed feels, the worse his delusions become and he occasionally has black outs where Riddler takes over to play his games.
Powers and Abilities: •Genius intellect: Edward is a genius with no qualifiers on that.
• Eidetic memory
• Exceptionally educated: Edward has extensive knowledge of a variety of sciences and a variety of esoterica from other fields. (This includes physics, chemistry and engineering with an unfortunate interest in explosives.)
• Logical reasoning: Not only is he able to calculate probabilities and odds very easily (including the likelihood of certain events happening), but he can break people and situations down into puzzles with predictable and quantifiable choices and possibilities, making them little more than a puzzle to be solved. Edward can crack almost any puzzle exceptionally quickly.
• Manipulation: While a very poor outright liar and prone to outbursts of truth telling and over sharing, Edward is skilled enough at reading people to tell them what he thinks they want to hear, or expect to hear. He is far better at showing very little emotion and disassociating than showing false emotion. (Notably, Riddler is more skilled at all of this than Edward.)
• Forensics specialist: Even more than just knowing sciences, Edward is an exceptional forensics scientist with observational skills matching his ability to analyse the information he notices.
• Lock picking
• Medical training
• Origami folding
• Knife fighting: Edward is very proficient with knives as a tool of defence and murder. He's also quite talented at throwing them.
• Pain tolerance: A highly abusive upbringing has led to Edward being able to disassociate from sustained pain.
• Strategist: Ed is very skilled at setting up situations to go the way he wants. We see this when he orchestrates Butch's public betrayal of Oswald and in the manner he pulled off his crimes and framed others for them.
Inventory: A puzzle box which has allegedly thwarted generations of great minds (solved). A switchblade. A framed certificate of sanity from Arkham Asylum.
