Ed is up and about early, as usual, but feeling a bit more relaxed about things.

It's a Saturday, so he can shop, Oswald can relax and they can maybe make some progress on Oswald's pain levels and unknotting his damaged leg. Until they get those better, he's not going to be able to start strengthening it. And he wants that, because it will make Oswald feel better about himself, and it will genuinely help him.

He eases Oswald awake at nine with breakfast in bed and explains his plans to go shopping for a proper massage table and gear and to be back probably mid afternoon.

He gets Oswald's bath running, says he's talking Edward with him to get him some exercise, and gets Oswald settled in the bath. Then he leaves the papers on Oswald's pillow for him to find and read, collects the dog and heads out.

It was the third morning of watching Oswald struggle his way around the master bedroom that Ed decided he'd had enough. They were spending most nights sharing the bed (at least until Ed got up again to read) and Ed was taking note of all the ways that the house was poorly suited for Oswald's disability.

He spends a day researching and working. While Oswald's yelling at contractors and being asked to choose between three shades of white blue that all remind Ed of the lab, he checks what's possible and looks up a couple of specialists who have done work on heritage listed homes.

He then picks his moment. Oswald's in the bath after a long day and they slip inside, coming to sit by his head, next to the bath. "Home life doesn't have to be this difficult, you know. There's modifications that can be made to modernise without losing the integrity of the house."

In a minor miracle, Ed had actually dozed for a while, content to lie and be a human pillow for Oswald, snuffling softly on his chest because of the way his face was mooshed against skin and bone. Eventually, he had eased himself out from under Oswald, tucking a pillow into his arms instead and getting up to continue getting ready for the day.

Which is what he had been doing when Oswald walked in on him.

This time, it involved a clean up, some clothes, then gently cleaning up Oswald as best he could without waking him. He tucked him in securely, making sure he stayed warm and the heat could get into his bad leg before he went down and made a piece of toast and some coffee for breakfast. He ate them at the kitchen table and was rinsing the cup for a second coffee when Olga appeared, glowering from the doorway.

Hint taken, Ed went back to the bedroom. He collected a couple of books on the way and settled down at Oswald's desk to read and drink coffee until Oswald woke up. He didn't have anywhere else to be.

Riddler takes them out to try and calm Ed down.

Away from the house and temptation and messy emotions, Ed does start to settle again, until he's quieted down and able to function again. Riddler's relieved and lets Ed pick the lock on the framing shop, letting himself in and acquiring what he needs and letting himself back out again with no sign of robbery. It's possible it might take them months to realise it ever happened.

Ed, being the sentimental one, is satisfied with this.

Riddler is not.

He spends a while acquiring his present. It's not as valuable as it could be, but he's satisfied. And that's enough for them to go home and get changed into more casual clothes and settle on the bedclothes with a book. He might sleep. He might not. Either way, he could be quiet until morning.

It took Ed four days, and most of that seemed to be waiting for approval from one office to go to the next office and get approved further along the line. Then they had to give appropriate notice and argue among themselves until it was agreed that it had to proceed, even with the objections from the DA and the GCPD.

The allowed clothing was restricted, but for the court appearance, Oswald was given some of his own clothes back, even if just his shirt, pants and jacket.

The session was mostly reading a list of the charges Oswald had been convicted of and the lawyer using Ed's neatly produced list to cite off why each of those was unsound and would require, at minimum, re-trial with due consideration to the burden of proof and threshold of prosecution.

It was a long, long session. But it ended with the conclusion that the state could not hold Oswald at this interval and thus

"-Mr Cobblepot, it is the finding of this court that your conviction was unsound and thus, you are free to leave this court. This is not a finding of not guilty, nor an absolution of charges, but a legal determination that the burden of proof has not been met."

There were reporters outside, of course. There were also several men in suits by a limo that was ready and waiting to whisk Oswald and his lawyer off.

From there, it was a drive. Out and to the Van Dahl manor, past the gates to keep out intruders and press and there, waiting on the stoop, was Ed, hands laced and a smile on his face as the car pulled up.

Ed is a little insulted at the fact that they sent another sub par psychiatrist to oversee Arkham. He had toyed with the idea of just causing trouble and mayhem for the idiot, but decided that it wasn't as much fun without Oswald around to admire it.

Instead, he played along. Feigned breakthroughs about watching a neighbour hurt animals and being touched in places children shouldn't be. A tearful argument with a mirror about being abandoned by women and killing to stop people leaving like his mother, another a sobbing show of accepting that he was split and needed help and wanted to be normal and whole and healed and accept himself.

It wasn't as much fun as regular riots, but on the sly he entertained himself by instigating fights in the other inmates, in planting suggestions in the wardens in the guise of being helpful, hapless Ed Nygma who had troubles with people.

It took eight months, but they escorted him to the gates and gave him his belongings and another certificate that said 'Cured'. From there, he went to one of his safe houses, changed into something that suited his 'cured' status for now and made a detour past the GCPD to get a photo of Gordon's face when he saw him.

Then he turned up at Blackgate for visiting hours. Dressed in a pinstripe, three pieces suit with just a green tie as a nod to his past and a pair of cufflinks set with tiny emeralds in the shape of question marks.

He's virtually bouncing on the spot with excitement. He can't wait to see Oswald's face when he sees him sitting there, waiting.

Name: Edward Nygma (Formerly Edward Nashton)
Door: TDM Door pass (Free Choice): Submissive

Canon: Gotham
Canon Point: End of S03E05 "Anything For You"

Age: Mid twenties
Appearance: The smug one in the middle.

History: In the show, we learn very little of Ed's childhood except that it created a man with several severe, trauma related mental illnesses which were exacerbated by and exacerbated in return his schizophrenia and psychosis. It can be safely assumed that his childhood mirrored that of his comic counterpart, being raised by highly abusive parents who neglected his emotional and intellectual needs and physically and verbally abused their son. His mother left part way into his adolescence and the abuse from his father intensified until Edward got out under a full scholarship to university.

From there, the show fills his history.

Personality: Above all, Edward is obsessive. The obsessions might change from time to time (barring his fascination with word play, riddles and puzzles), but they are all consuming when he has them. Ed will obsessively try to get recognition for his intelligence and contributions if he feels he's under appreciated and once something is started, he can't help but try and finish it the way he planned. Overthinking things is another part of his obsessive behaviour, but his obsessive behaviour also leads to one of his strongest virtues, his devotion. There is nothing Ed won't do for someone he has latched onto. He murders a man to protect his first obsession (Kristen Kringle) and the machiavellian lengths he goes to to uplift and protect Oswald Cobblepot include being willing to die to better Oswald's position.

Beyond his obsessive tendencies, Ed seeks recognition of his intellect from any quarter. He can't help but show off his intelligence at any given chance and craves for others to acknowledge him, constantly seeking that reassurance and praise that he is far more intelligent than the general population. Unfortunately, combined with Ed's amorality, it had led him to committing crimes as much for the thrill of proving he can and then get away with it, since he has a lot of sociopathic traits which has led him to lack real empathy with most people and his moral understandings are nearly entirely intellectual.

As a note, Edward suffers from several mental illnesses. He has bouts of mania, bouts of psychosis with hallucinations and violent outbursts but the worst is that he has a disassociated identity. His other half, the Riddler, is smooth, confident, manipulative and craves attention of any kind from anyone in any way. Ed often hears his other self whispering to him, or sees him in hallucinations. The more stressed and more uncertain Ed feels, the worse his delusions become and he occasionally has black outs where Riddler takes over to play his games.

Powers and Abilities: •Genius intellect: Edward is a genius with no qualifiers on that.
• Eidetic memory
• Exceptionally educated: Edward has extensive knowledge of a variety of sciences and a variety of esoterica from other fields. (This includes physics, chemistry and engineering with an unfortunate interest in explosives.)
• Logical reasoning: Not only is he able to calculate probabilities and odds very easily (including the likelihood of certain events happening), but he can break people and situations down into puzzles with predictable and quantifiable choices and possibilities, making them little more than a puzzle to be solved. Edward can crack almost any puzzle exceptionally quickly.
• Manipulation: While a very poor outright liar and prone to outbursts of truth telling and over sharing, Edward is skilled enough at reading people to tell them what he thinks they want to hear, or expect to hear. He is far better at showing very little emotion and disassociating than showing false emotion. (Notably, Riddler is more skilled at all of this than Edward.)
• Forensics specialist: Even more than just knowing sciences, Edward is an exceptional forensics scientist with observational skills matching his ability to analyse the information he notices.
• Lock picking
• Medical training
• Origami folding
• Knife fighting: Edward is very proficient with knives as a tool of defence and murder. He's also quite talented at throwing them.
• Pain tolerance: A highly abusive upbringing has led to Edward being able to disassociate from sustained pain.
• Strategist: Ed is very skilled at setting up situations to go the way he wants. We see this when he orchestrates Butch's public betrayal of Oswald and in the manner he pulled off his crimes and framed others for them.
Inventory: A puzzle box which has allegedly thwarted generations of great minds (solved). A switchblade. A framed certificate of sanity from Arkham Asylum.

Alone in the room he had managed to scrounge up for himself, Ed found himself sitting on a bed better suited to Arkham and stares blankly at the meagre belongings that came through with him.

He had been the Chief of Staff to the Mayor. He had fought his way back from convictions, committals and his own weakness to that position. He had played Butch Galavan to secure Oswald's power base and he had had a retinue of people obeying his orders, including the feared Victor Zsasz.

And now...

And now you're back to being exactly what he said you were. A nothing. They looked at you and saw exactly what you are.

"We are," he murmurs. "If it's me, it's you as well."

His other had nothing to say to that, blessed silence following the words. He closed his eyes and held the framed certificate to his chest and pathetically wished that Oswald was here.

And you wonder why you got that mark of shame, wanting Oswald to come and fix it...

"I don't. I just- I miss him. I liked not being alone. Physically not alone, you don't count."

Eddie, baby, you hurt me.

He shook his head. He would overcome this. He had remade Edward Nashton in Ed Nygma. He had remade the whipping weirdo of the GCPD into a respected killer and that killer into someone respectable, someone with a friend and a home.

"No. This place isn't going to break me," he whispered to himself. "They want to make me like a pet needing an owner? Fine. I'll find an owner who can't keep their hand on the leash. And if anyone tries to make me their whipping boy again-"

He looked at the switchblade and then to the certificate again. His reflection smiled at him, sharp and proud.

Then they won't expect me.
