Alfred Pennyworth, British born, served in the SAS, I believe. At some point was befriended and employed by Thomas Wayne, philanthropic billionaire, and became his bodyguard, butler, and was written as the legal ward of his son, Bruce, should anything happen to Thomas and his wife, Martha.
When they were murdered, he assumed guardianship of the then twelve year old Bruce. He seems to be doing an adequate job raising a deeply traumatised, highly intelligent child. I don't really know the man. He seems devoted to the child.
